Bates is a private liberal arts college, founded in 1855. It offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in 22 departments. There are approximately 1,700 students at Bates. Most students are from New England and most live on-campus while attending Bates. The Harward Center for Community Partnerships was founded in 2002. One key goal is to develop deep, sustained college-community partnerships, enriching both our community and the Bates education. The Downtown Education Collaborative embodies this ambition, and Bates is proud to be a member.

Central Maine Community College was founded in 1963 and is one of the seven colleges in the Maine Community College System. There are more than 2,300 full- and part-time students studying in 25 program areas and many students transfer to baccalaureate programs. CMCC works to provide quality, accessible college education and support community vitality.

Kaplan University aims to provide students greater flexibility to pursue blended learning options - taking courses on campus and online - at a regionally accredited institution. Students have the opportunity to explore similar degrees online with the benefit of additional programs, including bachelor's and master's degrees. Classes in all campus based associate degree programs begin every ten weeks during the day or evening sessions and some weekend classes are available. Financial aid programs including grants and loans are available to those who qualify. Career placement assistance is also available to both current and graduating students.

Lewiston Adult Education is the largest adult education program in Androscoggin County. We offer academic programs from basic skills to college transition, computer and technical workforce training, business and vocational courses as well as many other fun and unique classes. Our programs are open to all adults from Lewiston and the surrounding communities. Lewiston Adult Education promises to provide flexible learning programs in accessible sites to equip the community with the tools necessary to pursue their full intellectual, vocational and personal potential, contribute to the economic strength of the community, and participate as informed members of society.

LPL has been serving the educational and cultural needs of the area since 1903 through their mission of: Preserving our history, Connecting our community, and Enriching the life of the mind. LPL provides a wide range of books and audio-visual resources, services, and cultural programming, often in collaboration with other local organizations and agencies.  These resources and activities fall under six major service response, each of which are targeted to meet a significant community need:

The Lewiston-Auburn campus of the University of Southern Maine was founded in 1988. Many nontraditional students study at LAC and enrollment has been growing rapidly since it opened. Five baccalaureate degree programs are offered, as well as Nursing classes, Technology classes, and several Masters degrees. LAC is dedicated to creating programs that are responsive to changing cultural and workplace demands and to being a resource for the community.
