Get Involved

For Community Members:

Welcome to DEC! There are many ways to get involved in the work DEC is doing. The projects and programs page has information on ongoing programming that you may be interested in, including computer assistance for adults and homework help for youth. DEC’s downtown storefront center also hosts both ongoing and short term programming, including community conversations, clinics and exhibits. Information on events and programs will be posted on the website.

If you are part of a community group and would like to hold a meeting or event at DEC we would love to talk to you. Just call the office at 376-3071.

For Volunteers:

Volunteer help is always needed and appreciated. Here are some ways you can help!

Help youth with their homework:
Every afternoon, Monday-Thursday, DEC runs a homework help program at the Lewiston Public Library. 20-30 middle and high school aged youth attend every day. Many of these youth are African refugees and are ambitious and dedicated students but are struggling academically. They really appreciate help understanding and completing their homework. Tutors are given an orientation and asked to commit to one day a week (3:30-5:30), but you are welcome to come as often as possible! Contact Erin (erin@declewiston.org) for more information.

Bridging the Digital Divide:
If you have computer skills, the digital divide project has opportunities for you to help community members. You can help people one-on-one during daily computer lab hours at the Lewiston Public Library or at the B Street Community Center or in groups through facilitating workshops. Past workshops have been on topics such as: how to conduct online job searches and using Excel. Please contact Sherry at 376-3071 or at sherry@declewiston.org.

Local Food for Lewiston, A Community Food Assessment (CFA):
The Community Food Assessment is a long-term, in-depth project involving a variety of activities including research, awareness raising, GIS mapping and advocacy. Please see the programs page for more information. If you’re interested in helping, there are plenty of opportunities. Please contact Sherry at 376-3071 or at sherry@declewiston.org

Visiting Volunteer Groups:
If you are visiting the Lewiston-Auburn area to do a service project you are welcome to visit DEC and we will be more than happy to talk to you about the history of the area and answer any questions you have. Call the office at 376-3071.
