Welcome!During the spring of 2009, a group of students at the Downtown Education Collaborative decided to create a guide for college students in Lewiston-Auburn. These students were from all four "Colleges of the Androscoggin": Kaplan University, Bates College, Central Maine Community College, and the University of Southern Maine's Lewiston-Auburn College. This guide is meant to serve all of those students (young and old, residents and commuters, hard sciences majors and fine arts majors) as well as prospective students and faculty/staff that are new to the area. We are hoping to give students the information and encouragement they need to get out and explore the area! We have tried to include as many businesses as possible, but this is by no means an exhaustive list - let us know if there's something to add! A big thanks to Matt Duvall and Will Ash at the Bates College Imaging Center for their help creating and maintaining this website!A little about DEC…The Downtown Education Collaborative (DEC) was created in 2008 and is a partnership of the Colleges of the Androscoggin and community organizations (Bates College, Central Maine Community College, Kaplan University, Lewiston Adult Education, Lewiston Public Library, and the University of Southern Maine Lewiston-Auburn). DEC provides an opportunity for these Colleges and organizations to come together, brainstorm, share ideas, and pool resources to create innovative new projects in Lewiston/Auburn. This guide, compiled by students from all four colleges and two AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers, is only one DEC project; others include computer labs for adults and a daily homework help program at the library. You are welcome to stop by the office (219 Lisbon Street) at any time for more information or to get involved! A little about you…All of the college students in Lewiston-Auburn have a different relationship with the cities. Some of you grew up here, and some traveled here from around the world. Unfortunately, many students commute straight from home to school, or seldom leave their campuses during their time in Lewiston-Auburn. In many cases, students do not get to enjoy all that the cities have to offer! This guide is your invitation to visit the shops, explore the parks, and participate in the events happening all around you in Lewiston and Auburn. A little about the cities…Lewiston and Auburn have rich histories as prosperous mill cities and regional centers of business and culture. They have provided opportunities for a fresh start and hard work for people of many cultures and backgrounds, including a sizeable Franco-American community and, more recently, East African refugee communities. Lewiston-Auburn is currently home to about 60,000 people, as well as hundreds of businesses, organizations, vibrant public spaces and events. Check it out!
